I am so excited to join you on this journey. Here is a long story short all about how I ended up here on your screen. Check it out and feel free to reach out to me at tamara@s2swc.com or click the link below.
I am Tamara, a Certified Nurse Midwife here in the Greater Cleveland Area. I am a huge advocate for birthing people having a voice. For birthing families being heard. However, over the course of many years I have noticed a diminished ability to "get to know" my patients as I came into Midwifery to be able to do so. Corporate visit times were getting shorter, days longer, options less. It became disheartening as I watched the statistics increase and the dissatisfaction and fear of so many women, particularly those of color, increase. How can I create change in 15 minutes, even less once you factor in rooming, urinating, and vitals. When COVID hit initially, and we were doing visits virtually I noticed a switch. My patients were home, in fuzzy PJ bottoms and t-shirts, hair scarves, and no make-up. My patients were honest, their voices louder, our visits the same 15-minutes but somehow "longer". I felt a shift in those times because my ability to dig deeper, get to know my birthers was so much more intense. When we returned to regular schedules and in-person visits, I knew that was the change. I missed being a Midwife, with woman, I missed the deeper connections I was able to build during that time.
My love for birth spans all the way back to the birth of my son, over 20 years ago. My care was handled by midwives and at my visits I felt like they heard me and maybe even knew me a little bit. I did not feel like a teen mom on government assistance, which I was. Instead, I felt like the college student I was, who was making the best options I could for my birth and my child. I felt heard, I felt like I could advocate for myself because I felt empowered. Somewhere along the conveyor belt of health care, that instillation of power was lost.
I have attended thousands of births, many as a RNC over 6.5 years and about 600 as a CNM over ~7 years. The large majority of my births are unmedicated and my birthers have learned the beauty of "blow, so I don't sew". I find myself in birthing suites giving back power, giving back consent, empowering women to be heard. I loved my time as a labor nurse, LOVE my time as a Midwife, but I still feel like something is missing and it is that connection back to the basics of birth, birth worker, and birther care.
